The unit that was a historical outlier for health in 2024 is now fundamentally broken, exposing the main flaw in their top-heavy roster construction following Lamar Jackson's massive deal:
- Injury Epidemic: The Ravens lost six defensive starters against the Chiefs, headlined by the season-ending injury to Nnamdi Madubuike, and key in-game losses to Pro Bowlers like Roquan Smith and Marlon Humphrey.
- Lack of Depth & Poor Metrics: The resulting reliance on journeymen and unproven rookies has been catastrophic. The defense now ranks a dismal 30th in the NFL in EPA per play allowed, and opponents are converting red zone trips into touchdowns at a shocking 75% rate.
- Exhaustion: Compounding the problem, this short-handed defensive unit has been forced to face a league-high 286 snaps this season, accelerating fatigue and further increasing injury risk for the players remaining.
Offense is Inconsistent and Self-Destructive
Despite leading the NFL in yards per carry, the offense is destroying its own momentum with costly negative plays:
- Boom-or-Bust Running: While averaging 6.2 yards per carry, the Ravens rank a disastrous 28th in Run Success Rate. Runs are either spectacular or fail completely, meaning the offense cannot sustain consistent drives.
- The Crippling Sack Rate: Lamar Jackson has already taken 15 sacks (a league-worst 12.6% rate), compared to just 23 all last season. These negative plays are destroying momentum, forcing the offense into a league-high rate of third-and-long scenarios that severely limit play-calling.
- Lost Red Zone Touch: The red zone conversion rate has plummeted from a league-best 74.2% in 2024 to just 53.8% this year, showing their inability to finish drives when it counts.
The Ravens' expensive roster was built to win with its stars healthy. Without them, the team simply lacks the reliable depth and consistency needed to compete, forcing immediate action if they hope to salvage their season and contend for the AFC North.
