The Pirates are back in the win column thanks to another masterful performance from their ace, Paul Skenes, and some late-game help from the Toronto Blue Jays' defense. The Buccos snapped a losing skid by defeating the AL's top team 5-2 on Monday night at PNC Park, with Skenes' dominant arm leading the charge.
From the first pitch, the rookie sensation was in control, dazzling the crowd with his signature high-octane fastball. Skenes’ only real trouble came in the third inning when Bo Bichette knocked in two runs with an RBI single, giving the Blue Jays a short-lived 2-1 lead. But that was the only blemish on an otherwise stellar night for the young phenom. He finished with eight strikeouts over six strong innings, leaning heavily on his four-seam fastball, which accounted for half of his punchouts and was thrown 51 times in his 96-pitch outing.
It’s a trend that has become familiar to Pirates fans: Skenes' remarkable consistency. This marked the 21st time in 26 starts that he has allowed two or fewer earned runs, a testament to his poise and ability to command the strike zone. He consistently neutralized Toronto’s potent lineup, preventing them from building any momentum and keeping the game within reach for Pittsburgh’s offense.
The Pirates' bats, which were quiet early on, finally came alive to support their starter. Bryan Reynolds responded quickly to the Blue Jays' scoring, tying the game in the bottom of the third with an RBI fielder's choice. The score remained deadlocked until the seventh inning when the Pirates took the lead for good. Henry Davis, who had reached on a single, used his speed and heads-up baserunning to score on a wild pitch, giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead.
The wheels truly came off for Toronto in the eighth. The Pirates capitalized on a pair of unforced errors, with a costly throwing miscue by catcher Tyler Heineman and a sacrifice fly from Davis padding the lead to 5-2. These late-game miscues proved to be the difference maker, allowing the Pirates to create the separation they needed.
With Skenes' night complete, the bullpen took over and locked down the victory. Evan Sisk was a key part of that effort, pitching a perfect seventh inning to earn his first career Major League win. Dennis Santana followed that up with a strong performance, securing his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Pirates will look to secure the series win on Tuesday night. Mitch Keller (5-11, 4.13 ERA) will get the start for Pittsburgh, while the Blue Jays will counter with veteran Max Scherzer (3-2, 3.83 ERA) in what promises to be an exciting pitching matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET.
