Patrick Mahomes holds an impeccable 8-0 record against defenses led by Vic Fangio as he approaches Super Bowl LIX. Nonetheless, the two-time Super Bowl MVP remains wary of Fangio's revamped Philadelphia Eagles team. Mahomes anticipates a tactical battle against this significantly improved defensive unit.

"Every time I've faced coach Fangio, he's introduced different variations and surprises," Mahomes mentioned on Wednesday. "His unpredictability is what sets him apart. I'm sure there will be blitzes, and times they'll focus on coverage. It's going to be a chess match. Competing against the best is what you strive for, and he's among the top defensive coordinators in the NFL. It's going to be a significant challenge for us as an offense and as a team."

Although Mahomes has consistently prevailed over Fangio in the past, with six victories during Fangio's time as Denver Broncos head coach and two more against his Miami Dolphins defense last season, this Eagles defense presents a new challenge. Philadelphia led the NFL in fewest passing yards allowed per game (174.2) in 2024 and ranked first in yards per play allowed (4.7) and total yards per game allowed (278.4). They also excelled in points per game allowed (second, 17.8) and opponent passer rating (third, 82.5). This defensive prowess is attributed to a talented roster, including standout rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in the secondary, and formidable defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

Despite the formidable challenge, Mahomes is known for thriving against top defenses. He's undefeated, 3-0, in the playoffs against teams with the NFL's No. 1 pass defense, including victories in Super Bowl LIV against the 49ers and Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles. He's the only quarterback with multiple playoff wins against such defenses, achieving three.

A key factor in the Chiefs' Super Bowl LVII victory over Philadelphia was their quick passing game. Mahomes was exceptionally effective on throws under 2.5 seconds, completing all 13 attempts for 72 yards, two touchdowns, and a 129.3 passer rating. This success has continued in 2024, with Mahomes achieving a 109.9 passer rating (fourth in the NFL) and a 60.6% success rate (first in the NFL) on quick passes, including the playoffs.

However, Fangio's Eagles have also shown strength against quick passes, allowing a 93.7 passer rating (seventh lowest in the NFL) and a 49.3% success rate (15th). Fangio emphasized the importance of tackling this week, acknowledging the Chiefs' ability to gain yards after the catch. "They have skilled players and are well-coached," Fangio noted. "We need a strong tackling game. These guys excel after the catch, and Mahomes is elusive, while (Isiah) Pacheco runs with great intensity. Tackling will be crucial."

Super Bowl LIX is set to be a classic duel between quarterback and defensive coordinator, a true test of strategy and execution. While Mahomes has the historical edge, Fangio's improved Eagles defense presents a formidable challenge, promising an engaging "chess match" on Sunday.
