Just one drive was enough for New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to leave his mark on the preseason finale. Although he played four series in the team's 42-10 win over the New England Patriots, Dart's first possession set the tone for a promising night and a phenomenal preseason. The rookie first-rounder, who was the No. 25 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, showed off his strong arm and mobility, throwing his third touchdown pass in as many appearances.
In his preseason finale, Dart went 6 of 12 for 81 yards and a touchdown. He also added a 23-yard scramble, which, despite ending in a fumble and a brief concussion scare, highlighted his athleticism. Overall, in three preseason games, Dart completed 32 of 47 passes for 372 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, while adding 52 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll praised the young quarterback’s development throughout the summer. "We're kind of on a day-to-day plan with the young quarterback. Every day we're learning something," Daboll said. "I think he's done a good job, credit the player first and foremost. Being a rookie quarterback is not easy. But he's made progress every day. I'm glad we drafted him. I'm glad he's our guy."
Despite his standout performance, Dart remains realistic about his role on the team. He is currently No. 3 on the depth chart behind veteran starter Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. "Obviously, you know, Russ is the starter, he's gonna do amazing," Dart said. "He's had such a great camp and has played at an elite level. My job is just to be the best teammate and be ready whenever it is."
Dart’s highlight-reel plays demonstrated his high potential. On the opening drive against the Patriots, he connected with tight end Greg Dulcich on a 7-yard laser for a touchdown. Later, a 50-yard gain to Gunner Olszewski came on an improvised, point-guard-like pass on the run, showcasing his impressive football IQ and athleticism.
While there were some rookie miscues—a sack, a dropped pass by a teammate, and the aforementioned fumble—Dart's competitive nature was on full display. Daboll said he wouldn't "coach out of him" the willingness to take a hit rather than slide, but acknowledged that the final preseason game was probably a good time to make the safe play.
Dart’s performance has undoubtedly fueled the optimism of Giants fans. While it may be a while before he gets his number called in a regular-season game, his memorable preseason, which included being named a team captain, has laid the foundation for what many hope will be a successful career in New York.
